Tale of Two Cities

February 13, 2005

Los Angeles and Anaheim. Tinseltown vs. Fantasyland.

And yeah, it is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done. I’m back to sticking up for the Dodgers. My Dodgers, our Dodgers.

Between the vapor emanating from meanie TJ Simers and boob Arte Moreno, there’s ample reason to come to the defense of the worthy club.

Simers and Moreno have accomplished something, all right. They’ve stirred right-thinking fans to abandon their DePodesta bashing, and once again root for the only team in Southern California that ever really mattered. Your Los Angeles Dodgers, who actually are of Los Angeles…

It’ll be interesting to see how the Dodgers handle the opponent’s name during the Freeway Series. Sure, you can take the freeway from L.A. to L.A., but in keeping with the spirit of the series, the Stadium scoreboards should spell out “ Anaheim” or “ California” or just plain “Angels,” with obvious emphasis on the word “plain.” “Visitor” is good too…

Rumor has it ESPN Classic is working on a sports version of “That’s Incredible,” inspired in part by the discovery that ex-Dodger Milt Thompson is a hitting coach, with the Phillies…

Good for Roger Clemens and lucky everyone else who gets to watch the Rocket for another year. Carlos Beltran is as over-rated as “Sideways.” Houston will be fine…

Almost as quality a signing is Kevin Towers’ coup, landing 39 year-old knuckleballer Steve Sparks. Not…

February is Black History Month. A couple things for your consideration. First, please read the feature on Negro League pitcher Will Jackman below the fold. It’s by African American sportswriter Bijan C. Bayne, author of "Sky Kings: Black Pioneers of Professional Basketball.”

For incredibly cool and authentic Negro League caps, jerseys and jackets, shop www.houseofnubian.com. Profits benefit the Surviving Players of the Negro Leagues organization. Featured are items from Jackie Robinson’s old squad, the Kansas City Monarchs, to the Newark Dodgers and everything in between. Great, great stuff…

Oh joy, Dave Wannstedt and Tim Floyd are employed again. There’s no minority hiring problem in sports at all. None whatsoever…

Even better, if you think the selling of the exemplary Milwaukee Brewers franchise means baseball is that much closer to being Selig-less, think again. With conflict of interest out of the way and nepotism not yet on the agenda (what with the wonderful new steroid program work to do and all), Selig’s daughter Wendy was hired to run the new Phoenix-based MLB office. Handing out staples and pens, I think…

Statue for Sandy : The Koufax in bronze campaign continues, so please scroll down to the photo below and vote yes on 32…

Remember, glove conquers all….
