That’s It, Blame the Ball

Yes, Cubs’ fans, it’s the ball’s fault. You might as well skip the death threats and go straight to the lynching. Imploding, whatever.

Forget the poor fan, and never mind Kerry Wood; just string up the damn baseball. As if being born in Haiti isn’t enough.

Course, if the Cubs could actually beat an expansion team, and maybe sacrifice a base-runner instead of a base-ball occasionally, we might be able to waste this conversation on something a tad less pathetic.

In 1969, Chicago choked it over to the Miracle Mets. 1984 was the year Leon Durham and the Cubs handed a pennant to the San Diego Padres. The San Diego Padres! And last year of course, the Florida Marlins.

When it comes right down to it though, the best way to stop losing is to stop acting like losers. Lovable losers are still losers, OK. It’s time for an attitude adjustment. There are no curses to defy, with or without explosives. Gravity yes, curses no…

Visa problems. They’re everywhere you want to be…

Mike Montgomery is the Bobby Cox of college basketball. Look for another premature exit for the Cardinal…

Bob Vila is a five-tool player…

It’s just as likely the Dodgers will land a stick second baseman than it is a first baseman or a corner outfielder. Jose Vidro would be nice…

Let’s hear it for Paul Lo Duca’s beefing up in the weight room this offseason. It worked for Brian Downing big time, so why not Lo Duca? Now, if Jim Tracy would just throw in a day off periodically, his catcher might last the season…

I have no idea if Barry Bonds is now or ever was a steroid user. But where Mark McGwire stepped up and publicly quit taking creatine supplements for all the right reasons, Bonds came forward and said he used them, as if to say, “Not steroids, Andro.” Just andro…

Don’t toss and turn pondering Heathcliffs. That wasn’t former Philly and Boston closer, Heathcliff Slocumb winning the Chrysler Classic of Tucson. It was Heath Slocum, with a 22-under-par 266, for his first victory on the PGA tour…

Statue for Sandy:
Magic Johnson has a statue at Staples, Willie Mays is displayed in bronze at Pac Bell/SBC, and Henry Aaron is enshrined in Atlanta. PNC has Roberto Clemente. Let’s make Sandy Koufax next, shall we.

BaseballSavvy.com and Malcolm DeMille, Inc. are proud to sponsor a campaign to encourage the Dodgers to commission the work, for placement at Dodger Stadium in time for Opening Day, 2005.

To chime in, to tell the Dodgers how you feel about Sandy Koufax, scroll down to the photo of Sandy below, and cast your vote. We’ll make sure it gets to 1000 Elysian Park Avenue…

Remember, glove conquers all….
