One Cheer for Interleague Play

Yee-ayy!

OK, that's enough.

The National League meets the American. Fine and dandy, with no major disasters to report. Seas didn't spill over coastlines and engulf major cities, or Anaheim.

Bob Costas' warning that interleague play would ruin the World Series or lead to the end of civilization as we know it continues to be wrong, by oh I don't know, totally.

And as is usually the case, Bud Selig was wrong. Interleague play didn't end hunger or cure all ills. It didn't make baseball better than it already was, hasn't significantly increased attendance, and just plain doesn't make a major difference one way or another.

Sure, Boston and Los Angeles was great, and New York-L.A will be too, but for every one of those, there's a Florida vs. Detroit, a Colorado-Tampa Bay, or an Arizona-Toronto.

Yes, it's fun for a week and it's a nice way to jumpstart summer, but trust me, by August you'll be sick of it…

We kid Rafael Palmeiro about being mentored by Bob Dole, and talk about Viagra's not being a banned substance, but the jokes stop there. Palmeiro is a first-ballot Hall of Famer and an historic home run hitter. What's more, he's going to pass more men on the home run list than Barry Bonds will before they're both done...

Trivia: You know the scene. October 15, 1988. World Series, Game One, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California. NBC juxtaposing Kirk Gibson's at bat
preparation with Robert Redford's "The Natural." Jack Buck screaming, "This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable!! A home run for Gibson." Brake lights shining beyond the right field Pavilion, drivers lamenting "Oh bleep, what have I done?!" Vinny accompanying a replay, "And look at Eckersley, shocked to his toes!"

So, Gibson hit out the last ball. Who threw out the first one, the ceremonial first pitch? Answer below…

Here's my list of finalists for Dodger manager, whenever: Jim Leyland, Orel Hershiser or Mickey Hatcher (tie), Luke Walton, Davey Lopes, Alfredo Griffin…

Reuniting Shawn Green with Carlos Delgado is a great idea. I can think of 29 places were that might work.

In fact, any discussion about acquiring Mike Sweeney, Carlos Beltran or whomever, and moving Shawn Green back to right field misses the point entirely. First base and Shawn Green are the weak link. Either you stick with Green because you think he'll turn it around, or you replace him. If you decide to add a bat, it's his spot that changes.

While Jim Tracy shows absolutely no signs of having the answer one way or another, I'm confident Paul DePodesta will…

Prediction: Eric Karros rejoins the Dodgers or the Cubs by August 31…

Better: Mike Piazza rejoins the Dodgers by August 31...

Jose Lima has become the Rick Fox of the Dodgers. Not the big star, but a likable guy who contributes beyond his play by gladly filling media time so his teammates don't have to…

Statue for Sandy: BaseballSavvy.com and sports sculptor Malcolm DeMille (www.mdemille.com) are honored to sponsor an e-petition to encourage the Dodgers to commission a statue of Sandy Koufax for placement at Dodger Stadium next season.

If you haven't voted yet, please scroll down to the photo below, and do your thing. Oh, what the hay, vote again if you like. Vote counting isn't an exact science. No one really knows how it works…

Trivia Answer: Nancy Reagan…

Remember, glove conquers all….
